Question:  My friend just moved from the city to an acreage and he wants to get a horse. Is this a good idea?
- Paul, Edmonton

Answer: Horses need a lot of care, and no one should get a horse (or any animal) if they don't know how to take care of it. Horses need the right amount (and the right kind) of food and water. They also need good shelter to protect them from cold in winter and heat in summer. They need grooming and exercise and their hooves need to be cared for. And when they get older, horses need even more special care.

There's a lot to know and do in looking after a horse. Why don't you suggest to your friend that he join a 4H group or find a riding stable in his area where he can learn more about horses. Only when he knows how to look after a horse, and can afford it, should he get one of his own.
